Committee Chair marks hard to find trail

Sally Sonne on Eagle Mountain Trail

Posted on August 10, 2021
Last weekend I hiked the Eagle Mountain Trail, up from the north on Eagle Mountain Road, over the top, and down to the trailhead on South Gate Road.

The trails have recently been cleared, and we found this to be a delightful excursion. The up trail is easy to follow; down has been more difficult. There are two paths down. One, to the left, when you’re about at the top, is more steep and difficult. I prefer the one that goes over and along the top before descending to meet the other trail at the bottom. Previously it was difficult to find this trail, as it was covered with growth, and hadn’t been used much. We marked it and now it is clear and easy to follow. This is not a long hike; in fact, it’s very short, about a mile up and a mile down. Then, if you walk back to your car parked on Eagle Mountain Road, the whole loop is about 3 miles. The views from the top are worth the trip, especially in the fall when the leaves have fallen.

There are two benches on Eagle Mountain Trail - one placed on a scenic outlook and the other at the top. Great places for a rest or lunch. Also, there are large boulders and rocks all along the way. Many were already taken to build some of the early walls and stone houses in Tuxedo Park.

One word of warning: We’re been told that there is a rattlesnake den someplace near Eagle Mountain. I’ve never seen one there, and they will do no harm unless they are startled. In general, if there is a snake, it will stay clear. No worries; just be somewhat vigilant. And, have fun!

Enjoy the rest of your summer.

Sally Sonne, Chair
Village Trails Committee

The Committee would like to give a special thank you to resident Tom Garbett who cleared the trail at well below cost with his men and equipment. Tom has always helped with our trail work and with the initial huge bridal trails/hiking trail system clearing.
